Treating congenital disabilities with gene therapy

 Several months ago, the beautiful singing voice of Christian Guardino earned this 17-year-old teenage boy an appearance on the television show “America’s Got Talent”. Guardino was visually impaired from birth, but now he can see after undergoing gene therapy treatment for his inherited visual impairment. Guardino inherited a visual disorder called Leber Congenital Amaurosis, or LCA. People with this defect lack a protein essential to the retina, the innermost layer of tissue of the eye, which is composed of a large number of light-sensitive cone and rod nerve cells. Cytogenetics arises from the combination of two words: Cyto (relating to cells)

 Cytogenetics is formed by combining two words: Cyto (relating to cells) and genetics (relating to genetic variation). In Thai, some people use the term เซลล์พันธุศาสตร์ instead of cytogenetics, and the term อณูพันธุศาสตร์ instead of molecular genetics, which is the field concerned with DNA, RNA, and proteins. Cytogenetics is the field that studies the chromosomes within cells, including chromosome structure, chromosomal abnormalities, and chromosome function.
