Since the 4th grade, Ben Moser had promised Mary Lapkowicz that when they were old enough, he would take her to the prom, the graduation celebration party. And when 10 years had passed, this young man truly “kept his promise.”
Ben and Mary became close starting in the 2nd grade. Mary has Down syndrome, but Ben never looked down on her, and he always cared for and looked after Mary at school.

Mary's older brother, Tom, said that not many people wanted to get involved or be friends with Mary because they thought she was strange, but Ben was not like that at all.
And when they were in the 4th grade, Ben promised Mary that when they grew up, he would take her to the prom, a celebration held upon graduation.

Ben said, “I think Mary is really cool. She is sweet, kind, and easy to talk to.”
And when they went their separate ways to attend different high schools, the two grew apart, until one day, when the two schools had to compete against each other in sports and Ben was playing as quarterback, he ran into Mary, which reminded him of the promise he had once made to her.

So he asked Mary to be his date for the prom, and Mary agreed. At first, Mary had wanted to go with her friends, but her friends understood.
And last week, when the event arrived, the two of them danced together at the prom, and they even ran into the teacher who had once taught them in the 4th grade.

Tom wrote, “What Ben did made his sister smile and made him believe that good people still truly exist in this world.”
